Fifth grade students were busy working on a restroom restoration project during art. We learned that art is a powerful tool to express our opinions and beliefs When art is placed in a public location for many people to see, meaningful messages can be shared. Eight murals have been carefully designed and crafted to be showcased in the restrooms in our building's main hallway. These restrooms were chosen since they are used by the most students, as well as during events held in the gym after school hours. Students were tasked to work together to answer the question, "What do you want a visitor to know about your school...What is important to showcase about your school or community?" Math was used in all stages of the mural production: measuring the canvas, drawing and measuring an accurate grid, drawing to scale, finding area, taking measurements of the walls, and finding the percentage of space the mural will occupy on the wall. We invite you to view our new art installation!
Our mural shows the sports that are played and supported by Union City. The message is that working in a team and having a good work ethic are important in everything we do. The kids at Union City reach for the sky. Our mural has the constellation of the big dipper in the center symbolizing that we set high goals and achieve them in both school and sports.
It is important to be yourself and not let anyone stop you from being who you are. The houses represent the town of Union City, the playground represents the school, the eagle represents freedom, the bear is our mascot and the flag means that we are bully free. The students on the eagle stand for each of us in the class and the color shows their feeling. Yellow is happy, green is confused, purple is crazy, red is angry, and blue is calm. You are free to be yourself and let your feelings soar!
Farms are very important to the community of Union City. Without farms there would be no food. This is why instead of cars in the school’s parking lot there are tractors of many kinds. If there were no farms there would be no food because the farmers plant crops and grow them for us to eat. Plus they harvest a lot of grain so we can have breakfast. We need farms to supply our foods such as corn, chicken, beef, eggs, vegetables, fruits, grains and milk. Spread the word and thank a farmer for all of their hard work.
This mural is titled Union City Community and Pride and uses the American flag to show our pride for our country. In the top left corner we have 50 bears to represent us, the Union City Bears. The white stripes have pictures and words to describe what we like so much about our town and school. Hunting is a very common activity here, along with sports.
The theme of our mural is to express yourself and grow. The paint brush is painting the images in the mural, as well as the poem about our school. The sun and the flowers represent that we are growing up. You should be creative and not worry what anyone else thinks. Let your opinion be known by expressing yourself and make sure you listen to the opinions of others. You should love where you come from and show your style. Don’t be afraid to show the inner you to the world!
